AMELIA EARHART
American aviator, noted for her flights across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and her attempt to fly around the world. After landing in Burry Port she won her place in the record book as being the first woman to fly across the Atlantic.

BURRY PORT HARBOUR
The huge harbour was originally built to export coal from the Gwendraeth Valley, replacing the 170 year old Pembrey Harbour which lies just 200 yards along the coast.

RAF PEMBREY
RAF Pembrey started as a training base for anti-aircraft gunners in 1936/7 with the 280 Ground Defence Squadron. In 1938 plans were drawn up for an airfield and the airbase was operational by 1939. After the loss of France there was a great need for airfields to defend Britain from the Luftwaffe and Pembrey became a Battle of Britain fighter base which included the 316 Polish Hurricane Squadron.
