Boat launches for Easter Kayaker
At 1 pm on Easter Monday 1 April 2013 the volunteers at the RNLI’s station at Burry Port launched to search for a kayaker reported in difficulty in Rhossili Bay.
Due to a strong easterly wind and heavy surf the kayaker was being carried out to sea. With the difficult conditions the kayaker had fallen out of his kayak and was unable to recover his canoe. His plight had been spotted by many people on the beach who had dialled 999 to call the coastguards to ask for help.
Swansea Coastguard requested the immediate launch of Burry Port’s Atlantic 75 Dorothy Selina. The lifeboat was in the area within 10 minutes of launching: the crew was given a search pattern to follow. Before completing the search it was reported that the kayaker had made his own way ashore but there was a surfer, who had entered the sea to help, reported missing. Fortunately the surfer had also made his way to the beach. The crew recovered the kayak and paddle. The kayaker was taken by RAF Sea King helicopter to Morriston Hospital, Swansea suffering from hypothermia.
The Burry Port lifeboat was crewed by Robert Davies, Lee Howells and Paul Stewart who was on his first call. Paul said on his return “it was exiting to have my first service call, I’m glad that the casualty was recovered from the water”.
