Labour claim a key seat in town
Labour claimed a major scalp in Burry Port by taking the seat of Independent deputy group leader Stephen James.

Mr James, who had been touted as a possible future leader of Carmarthenshire Council, received support from 622 electors but was pipped to the post by John James, who polled just 12 more votes.

Labour councillor Pat Jones kept the other Burry Port seat after receiving 741 votes.

John James said afterwards he had "mixed emotions. Steve James has served the community well for the last few years," he said. "I'm elated. It's been a good day for Labour, nationally and locally. I intend to listen to what the people tell me and fulfil my election promises. My father was a councillor for 18 years. He would be very proud."

Stephen James said he thought the Burry Port result reflected a national trend. "I'm pleased with the number of votes I have received but there has obviously been a Labour swing, as was expected, and it's one of those things. In politics these things happen," he said.

In Pembrey, Independent Hugh Shepardson will be joined on the council by Labour candidate Shirley Matthews, who ousted the sitting Plaid Cymru councillor Malcolm Davies and in Kidwelly, Labour's Keith Davies retained his seat.
